|Summary||0000208: USB transfers slow with Bananian 16.04 (was > 20MB/s with 15.08, now 1MB/s with 16.04)|
|Description||As stated in summary I noticed a significant loss of transfer speed with the new Bananian 16.04 (Kernel issue?)|
Read and write speed slowed down to about 5% of expected speed.
I happened after the update.
Sourcefile taken from a SSD attached to SATA port.
Target was an USB attached ext4 formatted 2,5" Intenso HDD. Tried with 2 different HDDs on both USB ports.
Never got more than 2 MB/s. Most of the time 1MB/s.
(Very annoying as this is my NAS with video files on it.)
Issue 0000207 (https://dev.bananian.org/view.php?id=207 [^]) can be closed as I supposed it to be a network issue first.

I cannnot reproduce the issue with Bananain 16.04.
I have tried the following:
root@bananapi ~ # dd if=dumpfile of=/mnt/test bs=1M
100+0 records in
100+0 records out
104857600 bytes (105 MB) copied, 3.54317 s, 29.6 MB/s
(/mnt/test is a USB pen drive formatted with ext4)
Then I've installed nfs-kernel-server and exported /mnt:
I've mounted it on another machine (Xubuntu 16.04) and:
root@nico-desktop /mnt # dd if=test of=/root/blabla bs=1M
100+0 Datensätze ein
100+0 Datensätze aus
104857600 bytes (105 MB, 100 MiB) copied, 8,92271 s, 11,8 MB/s
(100 Mbit/s Ethernet)
Plese describe your configuration in detail and provide steps to reproduce the issue.

Meanwhile during my tests the bananapi hung completely so I had to do a cold boot with separating from power.
I did a fsck afterwards on all drives.
My USB test disk now has normal speed but the other disk is still slow.
The diffenrence is that the slow disk is a 2 GB intenso 2,5" in a USB-3(!) external case
The "speedy"-test-disk an intenso 1 GB 2,5" in an external USB-2 case.
I'm moved my files from USB-3 disk to the USB-2 disk with both drives attached to my laptop performing with about 40MB/s, so I guess the disks are alright.
Maybe there's an issue with USB-3 devices attached to the bananapi USB2 port?
But if I'm the only one experiencing this problem and you cannot reproduce it, please don't investigate any further.
|I did use a USB 3.0 pen drive for testing. I will do some more testing during the weekend.|
After 1 day with the USB2 intenso disk I recognized that it is faster in response and in transfer speed than the USB3 disk.
It is even faster than in the "good old times" of the USB-3 disk. :-) I'll stay with that drive.
I forgot to mention that I got some of the "ata1 link is slow to respond please be patient (ready=0)" messages in dmesg with the USB-3 drive after I switched to 16.04.
Sometimes I wasn't able to boot with the USB-3 drive. 15.08 and 16.04. The drive wasn't detected.
I suppose that it has something to do with the power supply. Maybe on the edge of specification? To little power for the USB-3 drive???
If you cannot reporoduce hte behaviour then please close this ticket.
